A thug freed. A hero in the dock. Call that justice?

0 shares 24 View comments Two very different cases came before our courts this week. The first concerned Toby Hayden, 27, from Wiltshire, who beat his girlfriend so brutally that almost two months later she still has the outline of his footprint on her forehead. He kicked her in the back of the head as she lay on the ground and then attacked the two police officers who arrested him. The cause of his rage? He couldn’t get any money out of the cash machine. Toby Hayden was spared jail despite the horrific attack, which was sparked by the fact he couldn't withdraw money from a cash machine Loretta Butterworth was left with horrific facial injuries after her boyfriend, Toby Hayden, beat her up Hayden was already on a suspended sentence for a previous violent crime. He had drunk several shots of tequila and about ten pints of lager, and showed no remorse. Yet he walked free because magistrates deemed an 18-month community order and an anger-manageme

No wonder our leaders don't value stay-at-home mums (Just look at their wives)

0 shares 72 View comments Fury: David Cameron and Nick Clegg have not only failed to support mothers who stay at home, they have penalised them through the tax system Who could have imagined that when David Cameron launched his vision for a Big Society, he would end up making one key part of that society feel utterly excluded? Not the feckless, not the dole scroungers, not illegal immigrants, not bankers . . . but mums who have decided, along with their husbands, that the best way of raising their children is to stay at home. Since Cameron came to office, he and Nick Clegg have not only failed to support these mothers, they have penalised them through the tax system. The fury of such women came to the fore this week when 32-year-old mother-of-two Laura Perrins tackled Clegg on his radio show. She voiced what millions of other stay-at-home mothers feel — that this Government regards their role as ‘worthless’.  She feels women like her are being insulted and discrim

George Osborne links Mick Philpott to welfare reform: What took you so long to cotton on?

1 shares 51 View comments George Osborne reflected the views of the majority of hard-working people in this country when he said the benefits lifestyle of father of 17 Mick Philpott raised serious questions about the welfare state. The Chancellor knew he would be ambushed by the BBC and vilified by the Left, yet he also knew taxpayers who fund benefit scroungers like Philpott have had enough. For while it is true that Shameless Mick is a uniquely evil, exploitative individual, he is also the product of a far wider problem. As a result of his crimes, the debate people want about the welfare system is finally out in the open. George Osborne has spoken out, saying that the benefits lifestyle of father of 17 Mick Philpott raised serious questions about the welfare state Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has only recently received such public support of his reform of the benefits system from Mr Osborne

Crocodile tears of men who knifed Maggie

97 shares 187 View comments Almost as odious as the vile street parties celebrating the death of Baroness Thatcher has been the sight of the men who destroyed her appearing on TV shedding crocodile tears. There was Ken Clarke, who plunged the knife in her back, lapping up the applause on BBC’s Question Time as he described her courage and conviction. And Francis Maude wrapping himself in the mantle of her greatness, knowing full well that, in years gone by, he stamped all over her memory as viciously as those hate-filled protesters today. Ken Clarke (left) and Francis Maude (right) have both made public addresses praising Thatcher, despite both men having knifed her - either while in office or after she had left Downing Street Clarke was perhaps the most influential of those in her Cabinet who brought her down in 1990. Maude, who’s helped to organise her funeral, was among the first to try to airbrush her out of the picture once she had left office. I ha

AMANDA PLATELL: Why I pray my dear friend Rolf Harris is innocent

0 shares Few could be more shocked than I at the news that Rolf Harris has been arrested on suspicion of sex offences, for he has been a friend of mine for more than 15 years. I know Rolf as a kind and generous man. I also know from past experience that, at times like this, you stand by your friends. That's why I pray not only that he is proven innocent, but also that he can survive what is to come. For I also know from first-hand experience how allegations such as these can ravage lives. I know from past experience that, at times like this, you stand by your friends A few years ago, another friend, a Catholic priest, was charged with a sexual assault in his distant past. Instead of being believed innocent until proven guilty, he lost his job as a result of the allegations and spent the next two years fighting the charges.     More from Amanda Pl

Nancy Dell'Olio's £2m richer but I still feel sorry for her, says Amanda Platell

0 shares 94 View comments Nancy Dell'Olio has finally settled her legal battle with former partner Sven-Goran Eriksson She’s never been a figure to invite much public sympathy, but I feel rather sorry for Nancy Dell’Olio. After months of legal wrangling, the eternally youthful Italian glamourpuss has finally settled her four-year fight over money with former partner Sven-Goran Eriksson. When their relationship collapsed, Nancy claims Sven told her that he would look after her financially, but then reneged on the deal. She refused to move from the £3 million Belgravia home they once shared until an agreement had been reached — and has eventually settled for a payment said to be in the region of £2 million. A lot of money, yes. But as she battled for what she considered her due, she sent a clear message to all women in a long-term relationship with a man, rich or poor, who won’t commit: it doesn’t mean a thing without a wedding ring. Nancy arguably spent the be

AMANDA PLATELL: Just how on earth did Stuart Hall fool his poor family?

0 shares 123 View comments Father-of-two: Now the truth has been exposed about Stuart Hall, his family is devastated, but a friend says they are determined to stand by him Among all the astonishing questions raised by Stuart Hall’s confession to 14 child sex attacks, perhaps the most troubling is this: how could his wife of 54 years not have suspected a thing? It is true, of course, that serial sex offenders are clever at covering their tracks, at frightening their victims into silence and cloaking their evil deeds with charitable works. How else could Jimmy Savile have got away with his vile crimes for so long. But Savile was a bachelor, and a weird one at that, while on the surface Hall was a happily married father of two. He wasn’t going home to an empty flat, after his attacks on young girls, but to a wife, two children and a loving family home. Now the truth has been exposed, Hall’s family is devastated, but a friend says they are determined to stand by him.
