'We don't know who's here and who’s not': Former UK Border Agency chief admits immigration to Britain was ‘out of control’

The newly-retired boss of Britain's Border Agency says that immigration to this country was out of control and that politicians have no idea 'who is here and who isn't'. Tony Smith, who retired from the UK Border Force last month, blamed the problem on a surge of illegal immigrants who came to the country under Labour between 2000-2003. He said: 'There was a huge influx and frankly I don't think we have ever recovered from that', and added: 'We just don't know who's here and who isn't.' Speaking as ministers attempted to tackle a backlog of a third of a million cases, Mr Smith's said the problem began over a decade ago when immigrants flooded in. He said that after they arrived, many of them then changed their names and were now undetectable by authorities. In a forthright newspaper interview today, Mr Smith, who was awarded the CBE this year for the work he did on security at last summer's Olympics, said it was difficult for bor

Police chief slams officer for claiming compensation from a burglary victim as 'wholly inappropriate'

A chief constable today added his voice to growing anger over the Kelly Jones compensation case by saying it was 'wholly inappropriate' for police officers to make claims against victims of crime. Mike Cunningham, of the Association of Chief Police Officers, spoke out after Pc Jones was criticised for taking legal action against a petrol station owner after she tripped on a kerb answering a 999 call. It comes after Home Secretary Theresa May stepped into the row over the weekend by ordering a review of all such compensation cases involving the police. Pc Jones is making a claim against Steve Jones, 50, the owner of Nuns' Bridges Filling Station in Thetford, Norfolk, for failing to ensure she was 'reasonably safe' when she attended a suspected break-in in August 2012. After her astonishing claim became public, her own Chief Constable, Phil Gormley, criticised it as ‘surprising and disappointing’. Mr Cunningham told ITV's Daybreak programme: 'It is, to me, wh

Boy harpoons his brother in the FACE after mistaking him for a fish in Brazil... then travels by canoe for two days for treatment

A Brazilian teenager had to embark on a risky two-day canoe voyage through the Amazon to hospital after his brother accidentally harpooned him in the face. The 15-year-old Amerindian travelled 195 miles by river from his rainforest home near the border with Colombia to the nearest town with the harpoon sticking out of his cheek. The boy had been diving in a river to catch fish caught in a trap when his brother saw movement in the water and flung the harpoon, impaling him in the face. Grisly: This unnamed 15-year-old from a native Brazilian Amazon community spent two days travelling by boat to get medical treatment after his brother accidentally harpooned him in the face while they were fishing The youngster's family, from the indigenous community of Pari-Cachoeira on the Colombian border, sailed for two days to the São Gabriel da Cachoeira army hospital. Gosling bank robbery, Infront of Real People

Gosling bank robbery , Ryan Gosling’s bank robbery scene was filmed in a real bank, in front of real customers. The actor plays a stuntman gone bad in his new movie, "The Place Beyond The Pines," and he winds up robbing a bank, reports MSN on Sunday, April 7. This must be a fun film for the “Gangster Squad” star, who gets to ride motorcycles and stage a shootout in a real bank – even though any bullets fired were of the fake variety. View slideshow: Ryan Gosling filmed 'Pines' bank robbery in front of real customers Ryan Gosling said of the bank robbery: “I'm there with a gun and I look down and people are just smiling. They were just enjoying the show and I think I spotted someone filming me on their camera phone as I robbed the place.” Which only goes to show the “audience” of bank customers was in on the joke. It would be too dangerous, otherwise, since the terror of being caught in a real bank heist could brink on heart attacks. Or hysterics. Or lead to law
