The Mail on Sunday

Car parts and bicycle chain Halfords is a promising retail stock pick for investors, given the recent change of leadership at the group.

Former Pets at Home boss Matt Davies, who took over as chief executive in October, is expected to revitalise sales after trading stalled at the group under the previous management.

He will unveil his strategy for the group alongside full-year figures on May 23, but has already started making changes.

Halfords is a niche retailer with few direct competitors for its main business. It also owns the small but fast-growing Autocentres car repair business. It has cash in the bank, so purchases of other growth firms could be an option – and in this climate, there could be bargains.

The Sunday Telegraph

Supermarket giant Tesco suffered a shares wobble after last week's annual results revealed a 51.5 per cent slump in pre-tax profits and a £1.2 billion hit from its failed foray in America.

It also heralded the end of the so-called supermarket space race as it ditched more than 100 planned developments in the UK - a move that left it nursing an £804 million writedown on the value of land bought at the height of the property boom.

But the decision is encouraging for the group, allowing it to focus on turning around its core UK business, while also sensibly redirecting investment into other growth areas, such as mobile and internet shopping, as well as initiatives to make its big stores more attractive to shoppers.

While the company took its eye off the ball last year, management is determined to return the business to profit growth and, with the horse meat scandal also waning, the chain can start to put a bad year behind it.

Shares have raced 27 per cent ahead this year despite the recent sales woes and its potential for recovery means the stock is a decent buy.

The Sunday Times

Shares in Betfair have lingered well below their £13 listing price since its much-hyped 2010 float, creating an opening for a private equity bid.

Buyout firm CVC confirmed last week it is interested in acquiring Betfair, and with early investor Richard Koch, presumably has a strategy for reviving the business.

While there seems logic to a deal, the timing feels off. A new chief executive is at the reigns and investors are likely to want to give him a chance to improve the business.

A bid above £10 a share would test their resolve: it would amount to a loss for anyone who bought in at the beginning, but an improvement from when new chief executive Breon Corcoran took over when shares stood at £7.64.
