Sienna Miller finally wins over the critics with her 'heart-tugging' performance in Flare Path

With her high-profile romances and stylish dress sense, Sienna Miller has struggled to be recognised as a serious actress.

But all that may be about to change after she won over the critics with her performance in the new London production Flare Path.

After previous outings in the West End and Broadway in 2005 and 2009 failed to impress the critics, Miller finally turned opinion with her latest stage venture.

Professional recognition: Sienna Miller looked thrilled with the positive reception from critics as she left the Theatre Royal, Haymarket last night

No wonder the 29-year-old was smiling as she left the Theatre Royal, Haymarket last night after finally receiving the critical acclaim she has always sought.

The Independent's Paul Taylor praised her 'heart-tugging' performance as Patricia Graham, a wartime wife torn between her former flame Peter Kyle (James Purefoy) and her new husband, RAF pilot Teddy (Harry Hadden-Paton).

The Evening Standard's Henry Hitchens noted: 'She brings to her role just the right mixture of glacial poise and agonised tension.'

The Guardian's Michael Billington agreed: 'Sienna Miller looks suitably strained, tense and taut as the agonised Patricia.'

But some critics suggested there was room for improvement from the actress.

The Telegraph's Charles Spencer wrote: 'Sienna Miller has grace and glamour as the actress at the apex of the love triangle, but needs to suggest deeper currents beneath her character’s reserve...

'There isn’t a duff performance in the vividly drawn supporting roles and if Miller could turn up the dramatic heat a couple of notches, the production would be damn near perfect.'

The Stage's Paul Vale said: 'Miller acquits herself in a far more dislikeable role but her performance remains slightly tenuous.'

Leading ladies: Miller celebrated opening night with co-star Sheridan Smith at the Royal Horseguards, Whitehall Court last Thursday

Variety's David Benedict added: 'Miller has a lovely English Rose demeanor and calmly conveys being caught in a trap of her own making. But she generates no dramatic heat.

'Her inaction should be crucial, but without a camera on her she doesn't focus attention.'

But the critics were universal in their praise for Miller's supporting co-star Sheridan Smith, who plays Doris, Countess Skriczevinsky, a barmaid married to a Polish pilot who goes missing in action.

Smith was singled out by all the reviews as the star of the show, which comes as she was named Best Actress In A Musical for Legally Blonde at the Olivier Awards on Sunday.

The Independent hailed: 'luminous Sheridan Smith keeps bringing delighted laughter and a lump to the throat in her superb portrayal of Doris.'

Affair: Patricia plans to leave her pilot husband for reignited old flame Peter Kyle (James Purefoy)

'Amateur': Miller's West End debut in As You Like in 2005 (pictured with Helen McCrory) didn't impress

The Financial Times' Sarah Hemming added: 'The performance of the evening comes from Sheridan Smith... Always warm and impish, she becomes heartbreaking as she sits, smiling determinedly through her tears, while Peter gently translates for her a letter left behind by her husband.

Two years ago, the New York Times labelled her performance in After Miss Julie as that of a 'novice', while the Wall Street Journal's Terry Teachout wrote: 'All she does is stalk around the stage striking vampy poses... she has no more business playing a classic stage role than I have posing for the cover of Vogue.'

Six years ago when she made her theatre debut in As You Like It in the West End, her acting abilities were dismissed as an 'amateur'.

At the time, The Independent's Paul Taylor said: 'Limited to roughly two gestures, facial expressions and tones of voice, wooden Ms Miller has repeatedly to resort to the amateur's tactic - when in doubt, shout and exaggerate.'
