In a ‘love letter’ to shoppers on its blog announcing the stunt, it said it wanted to give something back to groups of people who, in 2012, that ‘did not always receive the love that they probably deserved.’

The promotion will run for a different groups each weekend in January and qualifying customers will be able to claim a 10 per cent discount of full-priced wine in-store.

Discount stunt: Oddbins is giving a 10% discount to five groups of people - mums, gingers, Germans, journalists and bankers - who it thinks deserve more love in 2013

First up are mums, who can claim a discount from Friday 4 January to Sunday 6 January – to qualify customers must prove they are mothers, with a range of options ranging from bringing their kids in, to toys in their handbag.

From Friday 11 January until Sunday 13 January it’s journalists and bankers who can claim a 10 per cent discount by showing a press or business card.

While people of German decent can pop down to an Oddbins to get a discount from Friday 18 until Sunday 20 January and must have a passport or German Identity Card to prove their authenticity.

New year, new you: The wine specialist faced uncertainty last year but is now pushing the message of love to customers in the form of discounts.

The Oddbins blog said: ‘Alternatively if you aren’t carrying those around with you, you may be asked to answer a few questions to prove your Teutonic descent.’

Last up are people with ginger hair, who qualify for a discount on Friday 25 until Sunday 27 January.

It wants to repay redheads for any persecution they faced in 2012. Although on its blog Oddbins said things may be changing: ‘Last year was shaping up to be a good year for redheads, with sterling performances from Greg Rutherford, Damien Lewis, Christina Hendricks and Prince Harry.’

In November the wine retailer, which was acquired by European Food Brokers (EFB) Group in April last year after facing uncertainty about its future, announced that it would be rolling out 37 new stores across the UK.

It is part of its marketing strategy to encourage more ‘love’ amongst its customers and its latest stunt is an attempt to continue that theme into 2013.
