£2,700 a second: The price of an Olympics 100m final seat

Good news for sports fans who failed to get any Olympics tickets: Another batch is available.

Top draw: King of sprint, Usain Bolt

The bad news? You might need to remortgage your house to afford one.

The cheapest price now quoted by London 2012 for a guaranteed seat at the men's 100m final is £27,000 per person for a corporate hospitality package - equivalent to £2,700 per second of the iconic race.

It also emerged that more than half of sports fans who applied for Olympics tickets have been unsuccessful.

About 1.8m people made 20m bids for the 6.6m tickets available. Some 55% of applicants - around a million - missed out completely in the public ballot.

Those who were unlucky will get priority in the next release of tickets.

As if the £27,000 price tag for the men's 100m final was not painful enough, you have to place an order for a minimum of ten people, which adds up to £270,000 - though you will get some top-quality wine thrown into the bargain.

A Games official said yesterday: 'This is the only way to get a guaranteed seat to watch the men's 100m final.

'We are anticipating that after June 24, the date when everyone knows what they have got in the ballot, people will flood to us, as this is the only way people can get guaranteed tickets for the Games.'

Just days after nearly a million people were snubbed in the public ballot, it turns out Olympics chiefs held back some of the best seats for the corporate market.

The trouble is, if you want to be there, you have to stump up either £270,000 for an 'Option 2' package, or £495,000 for an 'Option 1' package.

For those crippling prices, you get tickets for 10 people to attend both the opening and closing ceremonies, plus either four nights or nine nights of athletics in the Olympic stadium.

Also included is luxury hospitality with fine dining and a selection of top-quality wines.

The sought-after seats are being offered by the London 2012 Prestige Ticketing programme, which aims to raise millions of pounds for Games organisers.

The hospitality packages are primarily aimed at corporate clients, but are available to anyone.

Yesterday callers to the prestige ticket hotline were told that buying Option 1 or Option 2 packages were the only guaranteed ways of getting to see the blue-riband events for those who missed out in the public ballot.

Unlike the controversial ballot, in which even successful applicants still have no idea which events they have bought tickets for, or which seats they will get, clients calling the hotline can specify exactly what they want to watch.

The official promised: 'For the men's 100m final, for example, you will get "double-A" seats right along the 100m straight.

'Put it this way, they are near enough to the front that when you stand up, the whole crowd stands up.' He added that just 75 yards away from the stadium was the hospitality centre with eight restaurants serving premier wines from the Bibendum label.

Last night a London 2012 spokesman said a million people had applied to watch the men's 100m final, in a stadium with 80,000 seats.

She said: 'Only 1% of tickets are sold at the prestige end of the market - and the prestige tickets fund our Ticketshare scheme which will give 125,000 free tickets to schoolchildren all around the UK.'
