Eighteen-year-old Bhusha Mehta made the city proud when she was awarded the Sardar Patel Junior Sportsperson of the Year 2013 award by the state government. Mehta, who is ranked number one table tennis (TT) player in junior, youth and open categories, was given the award by the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) for her consistent performance.She was awarded a cash money of Rs 25,000 for her achievements along with another Rs 50,000 in Shakti Dut Scholarship from SAG for the year 2013. Playing with TT Centre managed jointly M S University and Table Tennis Association of Baroda (TTAB), Mehta has showed signs of a promising player soon after she began participating in professional tournaments. During initial phase of her career, she was coached by Vishnu Sharma, Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach and later by Vismay Vyas, SAG coach. "Mehta won three gold medals and one silver medal in last five years. She got the award as she put up an outstanding performance in last school national tournaments," secretary of TTAB Kalpesh Thakkar said.She won her first gold medal in national TT U-14 tourney at Mizoram in 2007 and then went on to win another gold medal in U-14 national tourney in Chandigarh in 2008. In 2009, Mehta won gold in U-19 national tourney in Godhra and followed it up by silver medal in Rajkot U-19 nationals in 2011.Mehta, a student of Sardar Vinay Vidyalaya, has won 11 tournaments in last few years. Her elder brother Jalay Mehta, also a TT player, too, had won Sardar Patel Junior Sportsperson of the Year award in 2010.
