Sergio Garcia not going to say sorry to Tiger Woods over their Sawgrass spat - EXCLUSIVE

Sergio Garcia insists he will not apologise for his part in the row that erupted with Tiger Woods at the Players Championship earlier this month.

The Spaniard was enraged when Woods pulled a club from his bag during the second hole of their third round, causing a ripple of excitement from the crowd that put off Garcia just as he was about to take a shot. Garcia responded by telling reporters that Woods lacked respect and ‘isn’t the nicest guy on tour’.

Speaking on the day Woods said he would not be contacting him, Garcia told Sportsmail that he had no desire to make amends with the American.

Frosty: Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods shake hands after the third round of the Players Championship. The Spaniard will not say sorry for his part in their disagreement

He said: ‘We have not spoken and I don’t really have any plans to (contact him). Obviously he is not going to say sorry, which I can understand coming from him.

‘It wasn’t my fault. I am not the one who should go to him. I don’t care who he is.

'It doesn’t matter if it is Tiger Woods or Luke Donald, who is my best friend on tour. If I have done something wrong I will go up and say, “Sorry, I hope it is OK and that we can move on.”

‘But if I am not the one who did the thing then I am not going to go up and say, “Sorry for you doing that thing to me”. That’s nonsense.’

Garcia had been in major contention to win the so-called fifth major at Sawgrass, but he blew it on the stretch, while Woods claimed his 78th win in 300 PGA Tour starts.

Garcia added: ‘I don’t need it - an apology. We are fellow professionals, but we’ve never really been friends so like I said, I don’t need him in my life to be happy. I can live with him being on his side and me being on mine so it doesn’t bother me.’

Sawgrass woe: Sergio Garcia's Players Championship hopes were dashed by the infamous 17th hole

The 33-year-old is hoping to bounce back at the BMW PGA Championship this week. He has been uncharacteristically steady in the early part of the season, racking up four top-10 finishes in eight starts.

He said: ‘I feel very good. I don’t normally do so well this early on so I feel very happy with my game. I’m used to starting quite slowly and then getting more consistent as the year goes on.
