Nasser Hussain: Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad still showing the way for England

What outstanding bowling that was yesterday from Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson, and what a fabulous pair they are when the ball is moving.

In New Zealand, there was hardly any movement and it negated England’s strengths but the change of conditions has brought a change of fortunes for Alastair Cook.

I always thought this Investec series would be decided by how New Zealand coped with seam and swing — quite simply they cannot cope with it. What happened to the art of leaving it?

Top form: England's James Anderson (left) and Stuart Broad celebrate winning by 170 runs

In action: Anderson charges to run out Neil Wagner of New Zealand on the way to the day four triumph

It is all very well Brendon McCullum leading his side by attacking but I can’t see why the rest of his team have to go at the ball all the time. It is a surprise because in my day there was swing and seam in New Zealand.

Broad and Steven Finn bowled too short initially in the first innings, but Broad learned quickly from his mistakes to find exactly the right line and length both on Saturday and yesterday. Maybe it took a rollicking from the coaches for him to get there but he joined Anderson in getting it just right.

They were unplayable. If I were being hyper-critical, I might ask why he could not have got it right in the first place, particularly after the New Zealand bowlers had done well by pitching it up, but these guys are not machines and sometimes perhaps they just can’t locate the right rhythm.

Redemption: Stuart Broad recovered to produce a top class display after bowling short in the first innings

I have always liked Broad. I said it was right for England to drop him in India but I also said I wanted him back in the side in England and yesterday he showed why he can be such a dangerous proposition. When he is on a roll he just blows sides away and that was an incredible spell of bowling.

You have to fear for New Zealand if there is cloud cover at Headingley because I just cannot see them living with this attack again unless conditions are completely different for the second Test. You would fancy England to win 2-0 now, that’s for sure.

But there were concerns in the batting. England were a bit loose at times, particularly Ian Bell and Matt Prior.

Point to prove: Tim Southee of New Zealand celebrates dismissing England batsman Ian Bell

It was always going to be very hard for Prior to follow a Test like the one he had in Auckland and the adulation which came from him being named England player of the year with a good performance here. I like it when Prior is hungry and striving to prove a point and maybe he will have one to prove again at Headingley.

I would like to finish with a word for Jonathan Trott because he often goes unnoticed. Joe Root will rightly get the plaudits but Trott, in the absence of Kevin Pietersen, is a key man moving forward and joined Root in an all-important second innings partnership.

Trott can be maligned but he is low maintenance. You can just leave him to get on with his job, which is a very important one for England. I would have him in my side every day of the week.
