In good spirits: Australian captain Michael Clarke, center, laughs along with newly appointed vice captain Brad Haddin, left, and fast bowler Peter Siddle

AUSTRALIA SQUAD FOR THE ASHES (JUNE 26 - AUGUST 25):

MICHAEL CLARKE (captain) AGE: 32TESTS: 92ASHES TESTS IN ENGLAND: 10VERDICT: Fantastic player with a great record as a batsman since taking over the captaincy but can get opened up by moving ball in England. Thinks outside the box as captain.

BRAD HADDIN (vice-captain)AGE: 35TESTS: 44IN ENGLAND: 4VERDICT: Good selection. Feisty player who has had a lot of rucks with England players. Not the greatest keeper but a good counter-attacking batsman with a decent record against England.

JACKSON BIRDAGE: 26TESTS: 2IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Accurate, English-type bowler who has had an excellent couple of years with Tasmania. Probably owes his place to Mitchell Johnson having too much baggage.

ED COWANAGE: 30TESTS: 17IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Orthodox, sensible, stubborn left-hander in stark contrast to the approach of David Warner. Impressive in the aftermath of ‘homeworkgate’ and seems to be an important man behind the scenes.

PHIL HUGHESAGE: 24TESTS: 24IN ENGLAND: 2VERDICT: Much-maligned player with issues first against the short ball, then with a technique that made him look like he would nick everything.

DAVID WARNERAGE: 26TESTS: 19IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Hits the ball as hard as possible. Like Chris Gayle but not as good. Tough cricketer with the capacity to be devastating if he has his day.

Urn the victory: Former England captain Andrew Strauss led Eng;and to victory in the last series

JAMES FAULKNERAGE: 22 TESTS: 0IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Coming off a good couple of years with Tasmania. Product of one-day cricket. An accurate left-armer with a good slower ball. England have not always done well against lefties.

USMAN KHAWAJAAGE: 26TESTS: 6IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: First saw him in Sydney when he was built up as the next Bradman. He’s not that, but he is a stylish left-hander who times the ball sweetly. Yet to convince at highest level.

SHANE WATSONAGE: 31 TESTS: 41IN ENGLAND: 3VERDICT: Strong all-round cricketer with a good record against England. Has fallen out  with the management which will leave scarring and has trouble turning 50s into hundreds — but Australia will settle for 50s at the moment.

MATTHEW WADE AGE: 25 TESTS: 12IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Will miss out to Haddin but is the future for them as a keeper-batsman. A good runscorer without yet being in Matt Prior’s class.

NATHAN LYON AGE: 25 TESTS: 22IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Like every Australia spinner of recent years, he compares unfavourably to Shane Warne. An attacking off-spinner who gives the ball a tweak, but no mystery. Will do a job and that’s it.

RYAN HARRIS AGE: 33 TESTS: 12IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Strong bowler who skids on to you quicker than you think but plagued by injuries. Bowled well against England last time but has had knee problems which may take away his zip. If fit will bowl well.

Home of cricket: The second Test in the five match series will take place at Lord's in north London

CHRIS ROGERS AGE: 35TESTS: 1IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Another good selection. Averages 50 in first-class cricket and has played for a variety of counties. Will know every ground and pitch and the England bowlers would have preferred attacking Steve Smith.

JAMES PATTINSONAGE: 22TESTS: 10IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Aggressive, in-your-face quick. Moves it around with a strong action. Not too many injury problems and won’t throw in the towel, but not the finished article.

PETER SIDDLEAGE: 28TESTS: 41IN ENGLAND: 5VERDICT: I would have liked to captain Siddle. Enjoys the game and knows what it means to play for Australia. Big heart and won’t let you down, putting as much energy into his last ball as his first.

MITCHELL STARCAGE: 23TESTS: 9IN ENGLAND: 0VERDICT: Tall, gangly left-armer in the Bruce Reid mould but doesn’t break down as much. Reverse-swung it in India and bowls a useful yorker from over and round the wicket. Again, useful but plenty to prove.
