You don't want to mess with him! Ryan Gosling shows his tough

He's known for playing tough guys in movies like Drive and The Place Beyond The Pines.

But Ryan Gosling may have taken on his grittiest role yet in his new crime drama set in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 32-year-old is seen looking sinister and disturbingly indifferent as he gets his hands dirty as a gangster in the trailer for the film Only God Forgives.

The film, which sees Ryan reunite with his Drive director Nicolas Winding-Refn, is set in the world of Muay Thai martial arts.

Ryan plays an ex-boxer-turned-gangster who fights a Bangkok police lieutenant to avenge the killing of his brother.

The movie, which the actor has described as 'much more extreme' than the violent Drive, paints a gritty picture of the Bangkok underworld.

The red band trailer opens with a voiceover of Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays his mother in the film.

'When I was pregnant with you, you were strange, you were different,' she is heard saying, as Ryan walks cautiously through a red-lit corridor. 'They wanted me to terminate. I wouldn't.'

'I don't understand you, and I never will,' she continues.
Ryan is then seen with the same indifferent expression he bore in Drive as he is shown beating a man.

Scenes of Bangkok's underbelly then flash past, interspersed with violent scenes of shootings and stabbings.

Ryan says just one thing in the trailer, near the end.

'You wanna fight?' he casually asks a group of men.

The trailer ends with the actor rolling up the sleeves of his shirt, encircling another man as they get ready to throw some punches.

The trailer has been met with excitement online, including from Lost’s Damon Lindleoff, who tweeted:

'That new Ryan Gosling trailer makes me want to SHAKE RYAN GOSLING AND SCREAM "WHY ARE YOU RETIRING!?!" AND THEN FRENCH HIS MOUTH!'
