The worst fear for most of her competitors was failing to nail their routines.
But Kendra Wilkinson was the true telly flop on Tuesday night's edition of Splash after she refused to dive.
The Playboy Playmate couldn't face leaping off the board with partner Rory Bushfield on the ABC show, a decision she said would haunt her for the rest of her life.
The terrified 27-year-old - who earlier admitted on the show she was afraid of heights - was teamed up with the extreme skier for the pairs diving episode.
Wildman Rory defied doctors' orders to stop diving after he ruptured an eardrum in practice.
But even his bravery wasn't enough to get her to make the leap. Divemaster Greg Louganis wanted them to do a 'baby' catch dive - with Rory holding Kendra in his arms as they jumped.
He advised they do it from the highest board, if Kendra could face it, to make it easier on Rory.
But she kept finding excuses not to do it in practice sessions.
'I have to poop,' Kendra claimed as he tried again and again to get her to jump from a height.
'She's not an easy girl to convince to do anything,' Rory said.
And when it came to the real thing he tried to get her to go off the 23 ft board.
'I can't do it,' she said, as the crowd cheered her on.
'This is the worst feeling of my life, right now.'
'He is so inspiring to be with,' a terrified looking Kendra said of Rory as she fought back tears.
'I can't,' she said as her husband watched in fear in the crowd.
'Just trust Rory,' shouted Greg Louganis as she stalled again.
'Don't walk away,' urged Rory as the crowd again cheered her on.
'I can't. I love you,' she told him as she tried to walk away and began to climb back down the stairs.
'I'm so sorry everybody.'
Host Joey Lawrence warned her she would be eliminated if she didn't do the dive.
'That might be a happy ending for me,' she admitted.
'We've got this,' insisted Rory as he tried one last time to get her to do it.
'I'm sorry Rory,' she said said as she made her way back to the other contestants.
'It's very bittersweet,' said Kendra. 'One thing I don't do is quit and this is the first time in my life I've quit so I'm not happy. This will haunt me for the rest of my life.'
Earlier viewers saw Rory screamed in pain as he hit the water when he tried to inspire Kendra, and doctors ordered him to stop diving.
'Doctors say don't dive, I say, 'I'm going to dive,' he said. 'It's as easy as that.'
Kendra's refusal to dive meant no-one was voted off the show.
The team in last place would have had to dive against one another to determine who stayed on.
And there was a good chance that would have been either basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or funnyman Louie Anderson, who were in bottom place after their team effort.
The so-called 'odd couple' - 417 lbs Louie and Kareem, who stands 7ft 2ins tall - were the first pair to dive.
'I'm going to climb up on your back like a Superman cape then I'm going to kick off, spin… Oh no, that won't work,' he told the sports star in practice.
Kareem joked that they should be nicknamed the '10 Team' - because when the two men stand next to each other, Kareem resembles the number '1' and Louie , who is much wider, looks like the number '0'.
Greg Louganis urged them to do a back and front line-up at the same time for their dive.
The pair nervously approached the edge of the 16 ft diving board in matching yellow and purple wetsuits.
'I need a second,' said a panicked looking Louie as he tried to steel his nerves.
'Trust Kareem,' urged Greg Louganis. 'You got it.'
Louie and Kareem shared a high-five before getting into position, as the rest of the contestants looked on nervously.
Both men stood with their backs away from the pool as they tried to do the simultaneous flip dive.
'One, two, fall,' counted Kareem - before he fell first with Louie tumbling just a second behind him.
But the crowd didn't seem to mind and cheered the pair relentlessly anyway.
'It was scary,' said Kareem afterwards.
'Me neither,' joked Louie. 'You go off there and go, 'Mom!''
David Boudia said: 'This is synchro. It was a little off. Kareem, you were stiff.'
He gave them six points.
'I gotta squeeze my butt!' said Louie after hearing David's advice.
'I've never seen a tsunami in a dive pool before, so that was pretty phenomenal' said Steve Foley, referring to the pair's weight.
'You mean a Lou-nami,' butted in Louie.
'You have chemistry,' Steve Foley added. 'I really liked that. The quality let you both down. The synchro was out.'
He gave them five-and-a-half points.
'There's nobody more disappointed than us,' Louie said.
The best performance from the night came from beauty queen Katherine Webb and partner, former child star Drake Bell.
She's used to getting 10s on the catwalk - but she pulled off the first perfect dive of the season, landing her and Drake 10 points.
Katherine, who wore a revealing cut-out blue swimsuit, Drake are the youngest divers on the show.
Katherine was seen shoving Drake into the pool in surprise as he waited to find out who his partner would be.
'I sure as heck didn't want to compete against him,' she said.
They looked baffled when Greg Louganis told them they would be diving the 'javelin'.
'He's going to be holding you above his head,' explained Greg, before suggesting they go as high as possible to score the most points.
'No way. I am four or five inches bigger than Drake,' fretted Katherine, as Drake struggled to lift her up.
'I'm putting my life in his hands. I just hope he's strong enough,' she said.
'My biggest fear is dropping her,' Drake, who is said to be 5ft 8ins tall, added. 'But without risk there's no chance of tens [from the judges].'
'I'm glad you two are doing this, not me,' said host Charissa Thompson.
'I thought [Greg] was insane,' said Drake, about the dive choice.
The brave duo made their way as high as they could go - to the 33 ft board - but Katherine in particular looked terrified as she peered over the edge.
Drake then lifted her on to his shoulders and made his way to the lip of the board.
He managed to smile for the cameras - and Katherine even managed a thumbs-up before they leapt into the pool below.
'Oh my God,' shouted a stunned Louie Anderson.
'My adrenaline is pumping so much!' said Katherine.
'That dive scares the heck out of me,' said David Boudian before quoting from his favorite film, sports bio Miracle.
'Great moments are born from great opportunity. That's what we have here tonight,' he said while standing on a chair - before ripping open his shirt to reveal the number 10 painted on his chest.
'Our first 10 of the season,' said host Joey Lawrence.
Steve Foley said: 'Have you two had a lobotomy? Because you're a beer short of a six-pack to try that [dive]. That is a really difficult skill.'
He pretended to rip open his shirt - but then gave them eight-and-a-half points, propelling them into first position.
'I'm so glad we did it,' said Katherine afterwards.
The contestants all picked the dives they would do - but not their partners.
Also performing was 'the mother of all dive teams' - former Baywatch star Nicole Eggert and US soccer star Brandi Chastain.
The pair - dubbed 'Team Mom' - were happy to be paired up.
Greg Louganis advised them to do an inward dive pike / forward dive pike combination.
'You two have to communicate,' Greg warned them.
But the pair struggled to find their feet - especially Nicole, whose rehearsal tumble in last week's show was caught on camera.
'To be able to do it simultaneously, with grace, it's not easy,' said Brandi, who was brought in as a replacement after Chuy Bravo got injured. 'It's sink or swim time.'
The pair wore glittery Baywatch-red swimsuits for their dive as Nicole's daughter watched nervously from the audience.
They did a warm up dance as they readied themselves, before doing a catwalk-like model strut to the edge of the 16ft board and Nicole faced forward and Brandi went in reverse. They jumped on three - and almost landed in sync.
'What's better than one hot mom is two hot moms,' said host Charissa Thompson afterwards.
David Boudia said: 'It looked so graceful. It was a little off, let's get real.'
He gave them seven-and-a-half points for their 'grace'.
But Steve Foley was less impressed.
'A different direction dive is really hard to do but you were quite a bit out of synchro,' he said as he said they could get a lot better.
He scored them six points.
The night also saw the experts show off their skills.
David Boudia ripped off his shirt and trousers as Charissa Thompson asked them if they would like to show the audience how it's done.
'I forgot my Speedos,' joked Steve Foley.
But Greg Louganis was game - and also peeled off his clothes to do a dive.
The pair, who were wearing matching swimming trunks, clambered to the top of the 33ft board, turned away from the audience and did an almost perfect synchronized dive together.
'That is how it is done,' said Charissa Thompson.
Earlier, Australian judge and former dive champ Steve Foley drew cheers when producers showed footage of him in his prime, diving for his country, and rocking a bushy moustache.
'The best mustache in Olympic history,' joked co-host Charissa Thompson.
Co-host Joey Lawrence added: 'He was like the Australian Magnum P.I.'
'It was the old 70s porn mustache,' said Steve. 'It was very popular back then.'
But the cheers turned to boos when he added: 'A lot of Eastern European women had facial hair, too, so we've come a long way.'
'He is a jokester,' said a nervous looking Charissa before it was the turn of actor and singer Joey to be embarrassed when a shot of him in his younger years was beamed on to a giant screen.
'That's a lot of hair,' he lamented.
Actress Melissa Joan Hart also appeared in the audience, and urged her Melissa & Joey co-star Joey Lawrence to slip into his Speedos and show off his skills.
Detroit Lions star Ndamukong Suh and former Cosby Show star Keshia Knight Pulliam were the first two stars to be knocked out of the competition.
Next week the remaining seven contestants will face having to do a 'flip' in what was billed as the most terrifying episode yet.
