Style queen Anna Wintour has banned a
nude sculpture of punk designer Vivienne Westwood from a glamorous
fashion ball she is hosting.
The 40ft artwork of 72-year-old Westwood, made from styrofoam and lying across a worn-out mattress, was due to take centre stage at the Met Ball in New York next month.
Guest were to be offered the chance to make the work interactive by choosing a series of graffiti images to be projected on to the sculpture.
The glittering ball launches the annual fashion exhibition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
This year the exhibition is entitled Punk: Chaos To Couture so a homage to Westwood, who is famous for bringing punk style into mainstream fashion, was a natural choice for curators.
But the legendary editor of American
Vogue – so demanding she is dubbed ‘Nuclear Wintour’ – took offence at
the sculpture, describing it as a needless distraction. She used her
position as co-chair of the Institute to cancel its installation. ‘Anna
made a snap decision and that was that,’ a source said. ‘She always gets
what she wants.’
The decision has prompted fashion commentators to speculate that the pair do not get along. Wintour has never been seen on the front row of a Westwood show during her visits to London Fashion Week, even when she attends other shows by British designers.
A fashion insider said: ‘There’s never been any word of a public feud between Anna and Vivienne, but it’s quite clear that Anna doesn’t care for her. Anna has never attended one of Vivienne’s shows; she isn’t really Anna’s style.’
Wintour, 63, who favours sharp tailoring and is never seen without her black sunglasses and signature bob haircut, is known to prefer clean-cut designers such as Victoria Beckham.
Fashion photographer Nick Knight, creative consultant for the Met Ball, used a 25ft statue of supermodel Naomi Campbell in a similar way as part of a fashion event at Somerset House in London in 2009 – and UK Vogue described it as ‘one of the highlights’ of the exhibition.
But I can reveal the Welsh mezzo-soprano, 32, who is dating Prince Harry’s pal Adam Bidwell, was a frequent visitor to Lady Thatcher’s home.
Their paths first crossed when
Katherine performed at an Armed Forces charity event. ‘Katherine had
every right to be at the funeral,’ says a close pal.
‘She had been to Lady Thatcher’s house and sat with her one on one.’

Sienna
Miller and her fiance Tom Sturridge have been snapped up by Burberry,
just a week after I reported that model Suki Waterhouse had joined the
brand.
Sienna, 31, wore a Burberry trench coat on the red carpet for Tom’s new Broadway play Orphans on Friday night.
The
company is famous for signing British faces, such as Suki’s best friend
Cara Delevingne, so Tom, 27, will fit right in. ‘Tom is a public
schoolboy who is also edgy and a bit grungy, so he’ll be perfect,’ says a
fashion commentator.

The pregnant X-Men star, left, and Martinez are set to tie the knot in the French capital next month.
Sources

were recently locked in a custody battle over their five-year-old
daughter Nahla.
