Lambert slams 'shocking' decision not to include Michu on PFA shortlist

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has described the decision to leave Swansea forward Michu off the shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award as 'shocking'.

Michu has scored 21 goals in 38 games in his first season in English football - including 17 in the Premier League - yet the Spaniard was overlooked in favour of Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Robin van Persie.

Lambert, who came up against Michu in Saturday's 0-0 draw at the Liberty Stadium, told the Daily Mirror that he thinks the 27-year-old was overlooked because he plays for an 'unfashionable' club.

Lambert said: 'It is shocking really if someone like Michu can’t get in with the season he has had.

'I don’t know what it is, whether it is ourselves or the FA. But it is shocking that he is not in it.

'I did not believe it was because he’s at an unfashionable side before this season but I’m starting to see it more and more.'

Michu's team-mate Leon Britton agreed with Lambert, adding: 'We’re a bit surprised. The players who are up for it are top players at top clubs, but it would have been nice to see a couple of our lads recognised for what they’ve done.

'Michu especially because he’s been fantastic and you wonder where we would have been without him.'
