Jubilant Bostonians take to the streets in celebration



Bostonians took to the streets with joyful cries and cheering after police captured the alleged perpetrator behind the Boston Marathon bombing on Friday night.


Residents in the Cradle of Liberty have endured a harrowing week after the horrific attack at the race on Monday and the subsequent manhunt for the suspects behind the blasts, that put the Boston on lockdown while one suspect remained on the loose.


Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was arrested shortly before 8pm on Friday and transported to a local hospital after a gun battle with police in the backyard of a home in Watertown, Mass., putting an end to a nearly 24-hour manhunt.

A ripple of applause and cheering broke out after news spread that the bomb suspect had been captured.

In the Boston Common, the historic park in the city center, crowds formed and began chanting, 'USA' and 'Justice, Justice,' one local told the MailOnline.

In Watertown, police officers high-fived each other and shook hands at the conclusion to a day long manhunt.


One police officer, a look of relief on his face, said: 'Yep, we got him.'


Another officer was hugged by a woman standing at a barricade set up at a road several blocks from Franklin Street, near to where the suspect was apprehended.

Boston police commissioner Ed Davis was celebratory in his tone as he took to Twitter to say, 'It’s a proud day to be a Boston police officer. Thank you all.'

'The Boston Police Appreciates the love and support of the USA. GOD BLESS AMERICA, BOSTON STRONG!' a Twitter message from the police department read.


As word quickly spread crowds cheered and clapped as the news spread.


Many stared into their smart phones as they checked on the latest updates on Twitter and local news stations.

Several chatted on cell phones as they presumably called loved ones to tell them the hunt was over and they were safe.

The city of Boston was shaken after twin blasts ripped through the crowd at the race on Monday, killing three and injuring more than 180.


Just as residents began to recover from the horror, they were further traumatized by a full-scale manhunt for the surviving suspect, a search that began late Thursday until Friday and involved an estimated 1,000 law enforcement officer.

Thousands of Boston residents spent much of Friday hunkered down inside because officials issued a security lock down, while police frantically searched the greater Boston area for the remaining marathon blast suspect.


During the lock down, the New England town was described as eerily quiet as people nervously stayed inside and waited for news of a capture.

After an extensive search that failed to locate the suspect, city officials announced around 5:30pm that the lock down was lifted.


Just moments after residents were told they could emerge, the surviving suspect was found hiding in a boat in the backyard of a home in Watertown.

The celebration around the capture comes after a week of horrific violence following the Monday attack.


On Thursday night, the FBI released surveillance video that showed the alleged terrorists but the men were only identified as Suspect Number One and Suspect Number Two.

Officials pleaded with the public to come forward if they recognized the men and the appeal reaped a reward because within hours the two were identified as brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19.

Early on Friday morning, police targeted the two suspects in a residential area in Watertown, Mass.

A gun battle erupted in a quiet neighborhood on Friday morning, that left the older brother, Tamerlan, dead but his 19-year-old brother escaped.

The teen evaded police despite the heavily presence of law enforcement and government officials issued a 'shelter-in-place' request for the Watertown area and the request eventually spread to the city of Boston itself.

Mass transit was shut down, business were instructed to shut down and schools closed while officials combed through the streets in search of the heavily armed Tsarnaev.

Signs were posted about the city of Boston, informing patrons that they were closed due to the lockdown and the main congregating spots throughout the town were deserted during the manhunt.

Area residents told the MailOnline that after the security lock down was lifted, cars began trickling into the streets and pedestrians one by one began to populate the downtown area.


Despite the tragedy on Monday, heroes rose to the ranks to assist the victims of the blast on Monday.


Many marathon spectators and runners, who were just completing the grueling 26.2 mile race, rushed to help victims of the explosions.

One such spectator was Carlos Arredondo, who was in the crowd cheering on active duty soldiers who were running the marathon in memory of his son, Lance Cpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, who died in Iraq in 2004.

A widely circulated photograph shows Mr Arredondo assisting Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the blast.


Mr Arredondo, wearing a cowboy hat and a gray t-shirt, was seen seemingly pinching shut the femoral artery on one of Mr Bauman's severed legs.

'I kept talking to him. I kept saying,"Stay with me, stay with me,"' Mr Arredondo said.


In the days after the bombing, a spirit of solidarity was felt in the historic town as its native sons and daughters banded together.


As first responders worked in the aftermath of the blast and law enforcement worked to locate the suspects, volunteers from The Salvation Army set up canteens - mobile feeding trucks - across the city.


'The Salvation Army is serving law enforcement responders of the Boston manhunt at a command center in Watertown, Mass. with meals, snacks, drinks and emotional and spiritual care,' the organization said in a statement.

Additionally, representatives from the church were on hand to offer counseling and grief support for the families who have been impacted by the tragedy.


'In the worst of times, we are seeing Boston at its best,' Drew Forster, Manager at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corp Community Center in Boston, said.
