INSIDE THE BOX: Midwives want cash on delivery with a Hollywood career

The temptation of a Hollywood career and the prospect of having their own babies has seen some of the cast of Call The Midwife resist attempts to get them to sign up beyond next year’s anticipated new series.
BBC executives believe all the main characters will agree to film the third season of the hit medical drama set in the Fifties.
However, I’m told plans to secure the cast, which includes Miranda Hart and Jessica Raine, for a further two years have been largely unsuccessful.

Helen George, who plays nurse Trixie Franklin, has signed with American agent Schachter Entertainment after generating interest from U.S. TV chiefs when Call The Midwife aired Stateside.
Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens’ transition from British TV newcomer to up-and-coming Hollywood star is providing inspiration to his contemporaries.
Helen has already had one promising meeting in Los Angeles. When I asked if an offer of work is close, she replied: ‘I’m hoping so, yes. Fingers crossed.’
The 30-year-old also confirmed she is hoping to start her own family, making it impossible for her to agree to any long-term contract.
‘Hopefully, I’ll be having babies by the fifth year,’ she admitted.
While American dramas tend to secure their actors for a number of series at once, the Call The Midwife cast was initially signed for only the first series, allowing them to demand significantly higher pay in subsequent negotiations.
A BBC source says: ‘A lot of public posturing is going on right now because they want more money, but all the cast will be back for series three at least.’

Disastrous ratings have seen two major BBC Saturday night entertainment shows — Richard Hammond’s hidden camera series Secret Service and clips show Animal Antics — axed after just one series.
I’m told there are also question marks over Clare Balding’s much-hyped Britain’s Brightest.
‘The shows were badly hit by the surprising success of Tom Daley’s diving show Splash on ITV,’ says a BBC insider.

The best of Britton

Former This Morning host Fern Britton is negotiating with the BBC to broadcast her annual Fern Meets... seasonal chat series for a fifth year.
‘I’m hoping it will come back. We are in discussions now. I haven’t signed the contract but it  looks like it’s on,’ she tells me.
However, the Strictly Come Dancing contestant says she understands why she hasn’t been handed a regular new show since signing off from her short-lived Channel 4 chat show in 2011.
‘I did 30 years of a live television show somewhere. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t like to do it again. But I’ve had my turn. Now it’s someone else’s,’ she explains.

After a bitter break-up, X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger (right) has reached out to her former Pussycat Doll-turned-Saturday Night Takeaway co-presenter Ashley Roberts, raising hopes the girl band might reunite.
‘She sent an email, yes. That was great,’ Ashley confirms. ‘Am I open to other things happening? Of course.’
