'If you want to read something into a perfume bottle you can'

Dakota Fanning has defended her controversial Marc Jacobs advert, that was banned for being too 'sexually provocative'.

The colour ad, released in late 2011, showed the then 17-year-old actress sitting with a vase-shaped bottle of Oh Lola! scent resting between her thighs.

At the time critics suggested that Mr Jacobs was exploiting the fact that Miss Fanning looked so young, but the blonde-haired starlet has hit back stating that 'I love Marc and trust him.'

Controversial: The colour Marc Jacobs ad, released in late 2011, showed Dakota Fanning sitting with a vase-shaped bottle of Oh Lola! scent resting between her thighs

Asked if she was surprised when the image caused such a stir, the 18-year-old told Glamour magazine for its March issue: 'Yeah, I was! If you want to read something into a perfume bottle, then I guess you can.

'But it’s also like, Why are you making it about that, you creep? I love Marc and trust him, and we just laughed about it.'

The campaign shot - bearing the strapline Oh Lola! - was published in several UK publications including London Evening Standard's ES Magazine and the Sunday Times Style magazine.

After going to press the British Advertising Standards Authority reported that the photograph had triggered several complaints.

The organization said in a statement: ‘We noted that the model was holding up the perfume bottle which rested in her lap between her legs and we considered that its position was sexually provocative.

Good friends: Miss Fanning has hit back at critics who suggested Mr Jacobs was exploiting the fact that she looked so young in the adverts, stating that 'I love Marc and trust him'

‘We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality.

‘Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offence.’

Global beauty manufacturer Coty - which made the perfume - admitted the image was ‘edgy’ but denied that Miss Fanning looked underage or was inappropriately sexualised.

‘It did not show any private body parts or sexual activity. The giant perfume bottle was provoking but not indecent,’ the firm said.

Mr Jacobs said he chose the young actress because she could be a ‘contemporary Lolita' and he had been inspired by her appearance as a 15-year-old punk rock singer in the coming of age film The Runaways.

‘Dakota was in it, and I knew she could be this contemporary Lolita, seductive yet sweet,’ the fashion designer explained.

However Mr Jacobs' explanation again stirred outcry. Lolita is the little of the controversial novel by Vladimir Nabokov, about a middle-aged man’s sexual obsession for a 12-year-old girl. It is now a term widely used to describe a sexually precocious young girl.
