Girl, five, is found unconscious with both ears ripped off after savage attack by neighbour's dogs in her back yard
A five-year-old girl had both her
ears ripped off in a savage attack by her neighbour's dogs after she
wandered into her back yard.
The youngster, named only as Savanna, was flown to hospital in a critical condition after suffering bite wounds on her torso and neck at her Maryland home.
She has been upgraded to stable.
Her family issued a statement last night through the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington saying they expected her to face an extended recovery.
Charles County Sheriff’s officials were called to the home in the Waldorf area at about 6pm on Wednesday.
Spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the dogs had ripped the cloths off the girl’s body and she was suffering from dog bites, lacerations and other injuries to her face, neck and body.
Her ears were gone.
Deputies said the girl was at the home with her mother’s boyfriend, who found the girl outside and unconscious after she wandered away from him.
She was in the fetal position when he found her after the attack.
Police said two dogs — an English bulldog and a Presa Canario — were near the girl.
A third dog was found locked inside a kennel in the backyard.
The girl’s family said in the statement that the dogs were not owned by the family.
Deputies are uncertain if the girl let the dogs out or they were already out of the kennel.
The two dogs found near the girl were euthanised.
Savanna was in serious condition, last night, the family said.
Relatives are working with the Charles County Sheriff’s Department to investigate the circumstances of the attack.
