Former President Bill Clinton is now in step with the times, he opened a verified Twitter account on Wednesday night.
The 42nd President decided to try the microblogging phenomenon after comedian Stephen Colbert helped the 66-year-old, whose full name is William Jefferson, launch a page with the Twitter handle @prezbillyjeff on his Comedy Central show earlier in April.
Mr Clinton's new account, @billclinton, hits a more presidential tone and has already amassed more than 300,00 followers in its first few hours of life.

In one of his first messages, the former leader of the free world gave a shout out to his Twitter Coach, Stephen Colbert, and his daughter Chelsea, who is an avid Tweeter with more than 130,000 followers.
'Excited to join @ChelseaClinton and my good friend @StephenAtHome on Twitter!' he wrote on Wednesday night. The message was retweeted over 3,000 times.
Mr Colbert took full credit for the former president taking the social media plunge.

Chelsea supported her father's new venture on Thursday morning, 'Welcome to Twitter, Dad!' she tweeted.
As of yet, Clinton's wife Hillary, former U.S. Senator from New York and Secretary of State during President Obama's first term, has not joined Twitter.
Mrs Clinton is rumored to be a strong contender for a White House run in 2016, so a presidential campaign could be her impetus to join the social media conversation.

So far President Clinton is only following 8 Twitter users, including Chelsea, 33, the Comedy Central host and a slew of non-profit initiatives affiliated with the Clinton Foundation.
Mr Clinton is the first former president to formally join the Twittersphere.
George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter have Twitter accounts for their presidential libraries but those are not personal accounts for the former leaders.
President Barack Obama does have a Twitter account.
His account is managed by a staff member but he occasionally will send out a message that he personally has drafted. He signs those messages '-bo' to indicate he is the author.
On Thursday, the five living presidents were gathered in Dallas, Texas for the opening of George W. Bush's presidential library at Southern Methodist University.
Mr Clinton took the opportunity to test out his social media skills, posting a picture of the exclusive club of five living U.S. presidents who attended the celebration.
'Congratulations George and Laura on opening @TheBushCenter. Proud Hillary and I could be here,' he tweeted, posting a picture of the quintet at the Texas event.
Since Mr Clinton is in the picture, it isn't clear who commandeered his smart phone to take the picture and could have likely been the person who tweeted the message.
Chelsea Clinton applauded her father's enthusiasm for Twitter. She retweeted the message and added, '3rd tweet in 24hrs!'

Mr Clinton's formal foray into the world of Twitter actually started earlier this month, in an interview for the The Colbert Report on April 8 at the Clinton Global Initiative University, a gathering for aspiring leaders.
Mr Colbert gave Clinton a ribbing for not being savvy about social media.
'I do Facebook,' Mr Clinton said in his defense.
'But do you tweet?' Colbert asked.
'I think I'm sort of so insecure. What if you tweet and nobody tweets back? There's nothing worse than a friendless Tweeter, you're just wandering around in cyberspace,' Clinton said.
Mr Colbert then informed the president how he had taken the liberty of establishing a Twitter profile for him, with the handle @prezbillyjeff.
That account was not official and though is gained thousands of followers, those tweets are now locked since the handle was not considered very presidential.
Clinton's new account is verified, indicated by the blue checkmark next to his name.
A verified account means Twitter has authenticated that the high-profile tweeter is actually the person who is managing the account.
His biography for the account reads: 'Founder, Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States. Follow @ClintonFdn for more about my work around the world.'
Stephen Colbert convinces Bill Clinton to join Twitter
In his chat with Colbert earlier this month, Mr Clinton didn't mention the pitfalls of tweeting encountered by public officials, namely former Congressman Anthony Weiner, whose wife Huma Abedin worked for Clinton's wife Hillary.
Mr Weiner was forced to resign from public office in June 2011 when a lewd tweet he intended as a private message for a woman, who was not his wife, was accidentally sent to his thousands of followers.
After a fall from grace that was likened to Mr Clinton's own sex scandal, the New Yorker is now working to repair his image and is considered a likely Democratic candidate for the New York Mayoral race.
Coincidentally, Mr Weiner presented on Monday an extensive proposal to reform the Big Apple...on Twitter.
