The team managed the remarkable feat despite playing away from home and not scoring in the opening ten minutes
Welsh rugby union side Ynysddu RFC are celebrating one of the most
remarkable scorelines in the sport's history after defeating rivals
Blaina by 134 points to nil - away from home!
The match remained deadlocked for the first nine minutes, but Aaron Morgan opened the scoring with a try in the 10th minute the floodgates opened.
The winning margin wasn’t quite the 170-0 which another Caerphilly club, Penallta RFC, managed against Cardiff’s Canton in 2005.
Nor was it the 142-0 achieved in Australia’s demolition of Namibia in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
But Ynysddu’s 20-try whitewashing of Blaina nevertheless stands as one of the biggest ever wins in competitive rugby.
The club’s back row forward Nathan Diniz, a welder, picked up the man of the match award after scoring the last try of the one-sided game.
Gwyn Edwards, fixture secretary at Ynysddu, was magnanimous in victory.
He said: “To be fair to Blaina they are blooding a lot of youngsters and they did not give up until the final whistle.
“It’s almost heartbreaking to do this to a fellow club but you have to think of league position and points difference.
“We are second with a handful of games left and promotion is still on the cards.
“It’s a wonderful achievement for our team, they work hard and they are now getting the rewards on the pitch.
“We don’t pay any of our players and we are building up a good squad of mainly local boys.”
Player Kevin Chamberlain, Ynysddu’s website organiser, was rested for the Blaina game.
He said: “Even though we bagged 134 points quite a few of the first team were rested.
“We had a few pints in Blaina after the game then went back to our clubhouse to celebrate.
“We have some really good players who are just starting to click now just at the right time.
“I don’t think it’s quite a world record but it’s a club record and it’s quite an achievement for us.
“If you work hard this is what you get.”
Asked about Blaina’s reaction he said: “They were a bit deflated.”
Blaina’s head coach Gordon Thomas said: “There’s a definite feeling amongst the smaller clubs in Welsh rugby now of neglect and some have gone to the wall.
“We are based in an area here where you’ve got the likes of Blaenau Utd, Abertillery and the rest all competing with each other for the available players.
“We don’t have trouble getting players but we are bringing along a lot of youngsters.
“The oldest back we had on the pitch against Ynysddu was aged 20.
“And one thing I will say about these lads is that though we lost by this big margin they’ll all be back in training on Tuesday.
What I told them after the game was that in 20 years time they won’t look back at themselves as the team which lost by 130-odd points - they’ll look back at themselves as the team that kept Blaina going.”
